Coastal Halti Dog Head Collar?

I just purchased one of these for my beagle mix because someone told me it would help to keep my dog from pulling when I walk her. It was to come with training instructions and it did not. Are you to walk in front of the dog? I put it on her and she still freaks out on the leash and still puts part of the leash in her mouth and pulls. She doesn’t even walk…she just jumps around every which way and tugs. I feel it defeats the purpose of the head collar! Can anyone tell me how to use this? Help…I just want her to walk nicely on the leash so we both can enjoy our walks together!

I’ve used a head collar successfully on my golden for years. It should work for your beagle too. A couple of thoughts.

They do tend to take a few times to get used to the head collar. Try putting the collar on her without the leash and let her get used to it. Use positive reinforcement in the form of treats when she lets you put it on her. You might have someone help you. You put on the collar, while the other person gives her treats for cooperating. She may roll and wiggle and try to get it off but after a few sessions she should get used to it.

Once she used to the collar, use treats to get to walk at a heel with you. Hold the leash in your right hand, with her on your left – and slip her small treats with your left hand when she walks alongside you. If she pulls the leash, lags behind, or pulls forward, just stop dead still, ignore her and do nothing. Don’t react at all. Once she starts paying attention to you again by looking at you for guidance, give her treat and begin walking at a heel again, again giving an occasional treat as she walks along. Eventually she will learn that walking alongside is the correct way to walk. Practice every day. Keep the sessions short if she gets frustrated and then gradually make them longer as she gets it.

For treats, use something small and smelly – I use turkey dogs cut into very tiny pieces and put them inside an open plastic baggie inside an open fanny pack while training.

Good luck – this should do the trick.
