Gentle Leader Dog Collar Leash
Do haltis and gentle leaders TEACH a dog proper leash behavior?
I know they physically deter dogs from pulling, but after a dog has worn one for a while will they have actually learned how to walk properly so they can wear a regular flat collar?
I’ve always used choke or prong collars when training my dogs and will continue to do so as they are an excellent tool when fitted and used correctly. I just always see these dogs being walked around like they’re horses and I wander if they’re actually learning anything.

Choke and prong collars, when used correctly, do not harm a dog.
Personally, I would stick with what you’ve been doing. I’ve used prong collars and had great success with them. With some of the dogs that were in my training classes and dogs walking around the store, as soon as the leaders came off/slipped off the dog bolted. I think most people would agree, that is not proper leash training. In my opinion, the most important part of leash training is for your dog to obey YOU, not the collar/leader/whatever. The prong collars act more like a “bite” from the pack leader, which helps the dog obey the person on the other end of the leash. It sounds like you’re familiar with prong collars, so you’re probably well aware of what I mean.
In short, stick with what you know works. That’s what dog training is partially about; finding a humane way that works specifically for you and your dog.
