Electric Dog Collars For Training
Which kind of training collars would you recommand?
I have a german sheperd mix…she doesn’t listen so well…and I have tried everything…besides the training collars…
and I am wondering what kind of collars you guys have used? (name, brand, electric or cinnamon or ultra-sound)…
I always refused to use these kinds of things because I think its kinda cruel…but at this point, id rather opt for this option…than to bring my dog back to the shelter where I adopted her…
I know that if I do that, she will end up euthanized by some future owner….because as I stated in one of my older questions…she attacks other dogs, my mother and myself…
need help!!!
Uh Oh! Please do not take her back–chances are she is much like my shephard/wolf adoptee Rosie who apparently was beaten by previous owners and when we got her she was malnourished, unhealthy and tended to snarl and snap. I don’t know the kind of baggage she carries with her but we have had great success just using a harness instead of choke or other harmful means of controlling her. It has taken some time for her to realize that she is loved and part of our family or pack and that she gets rewarded with praise (and an occasional treat/vitamin)
when she behaves. we moved to the mountains a year ago and she started acting out by chasing horses and cows fearlessly, now she is a cranky old lady sometimes, but with time, patience and loads of love and praise she will come around. Make sure she knows her boundries. Tell her NO or use a soda can with a few stones or coins behind your back to get her attention. This has worked exceptionally well with our two adoptees that came to us a willful orphans. I would also plug into Matthew Margolis
or “Uncle Matty” for training in an affectionate way rather than use some technological torture. I understand your frustration, and you may need to repeat the can trick or a firm NO a couple of times to be sure she is listening, then when you have her attention, SIT! I can’t tell you how many times people have told us how well behaved our dogs are, but it took time. If she snaps consistantly or bites, they have some head leads that we used on both dogs (not muzzles per se, but they lead the dog by the head and can be tightened so that biting is not an option).
Good Luck and Be Kind.
