Found a dog? What should I do?

I found a small poodle.It had a collar on with a rabies vacc. tag on so I called the hospital thats name was on it and gave the number.But they said someone else called a month ealier and the phone number that the hospital had didn’t lead to the original owner. My mom wants to hand the poodle over to the pound.I’m not sure if that’s the best idea. ?

Take the dog to a local rescue make sure it is a no kill shelter at the pound they might put it down
