Dog Collars Prong
How to properly use a Prong Collar?
Hello, all.
If anyone has the time and interest, would you mind explaining how to properly enforce the use of a Prong Collar to train your dog how to properly walk with you?
Explain how to fit the collar, and how to go about using it.
Thanks a bunch!
Poster wasn’t asking if it where “cruel” or not. And anyone who says it is, well, ignorance at it’s best. Any tool (improperly used) can be cruel – it isn’t just the tool itself. Sheesh!
Prong collars where designed to mimic the bite of another dog. In the dog world, there is no such thing as “positive re-enforcement” (unless you count not getting bitten or snapped at as such.) While it’s true we can teach dogs through positive means, there is always the chance the dog could learn to look for that reward before obeying – and choosing to not obey when they don’t see it.
Many smart dogs have done it, and many will continue to do it. Hence the reason for mild correction when obeys are deliberately ignored or for basic walk training. As for other tools – complete junk. The dog does not learn a thing, you are just holding it back and preventing the dog from learning from his/her mistakes.
I for one don’t plan on carrying chicken or treats around in my pocket just to get my dog to obey me. Or risking my dog’s obedience in important situations and hinging it on wether or not i have food.
The Prong collar does absolutely NOTHING unless the slack in the leash gives way. Period. And when used properly the dog will feel the sensation of a bite and then nothing. Just as they would amongst other dogs.
The Prong should be fitted high up on the neck and should not be able to move freely. It should be snug enough to stay put (for the most part) and should not move down or twist around easily. The leash should always be slack. Two ways to train a dog with it – one being letting your body and theirs do the correction (meaning you stop and let them hit the end of it, which will NOT hurt them) or you give a solid pop with your arm.
Either can work. If you have a dog that surges then i found the best method to be just turning and walking in the other direction, letting the dog hit the end of the leash.
