Halter vs. regular collar for small dog?

I have always used a halter on my Bichon (7 mo, 14 pounds).
I have to use a regular collar right now because he has stitches in his armpit which the halter can aggravate.
He really flips out (jumps, shakes his head around. . .) when I use regular collar. . .

Q1: which do you think is better?
Q2: Do dogs learn to ‘heal’ faster with regular collar than halter?
Q2: Should leash be held tight & straight up from back off neck? (with collar ring on middle back of neck than front, side, or loose. . .)
Q3: Best way to teach to dog to ‘heel’? (my dog suffers from ‘alpha’ syndrome, lol)
Q4: is it true that regular collars can hurt small dogs because they have weaker necks than large dogs?

By tension in the leash I didn’t mean pulling the leash tight so the dog can feel the tension.
I just meant keeping it straight from back of neck instead of letting it come up with lots of slack from under neck where it pulls on jaw

dog learn better when they have a STRONG, CONFIDENT, leader, the gear shouldn’t matter

I find for larger dogs, that the collar is snug, and proper fitting, is best for training

to heel..walk a few steps and stop, then say sit, or ”heel”
if said is done , reward and repeat

the harness is better for small dogs *I* think
