Sewing Machine Advice…?

I am looking to buy a sewing machine for a small home business making dog collars, leashes and other miscellaneous items. I don’t have much experience sewing so I would like something simple and very user friendly. The machine won’t need to do anything fancy, but it will have to be able to sew through very thick, heavy-duty nylon/polyester webbing material. What would you recommend? I am open to buying a used one as long as I have some knowledge of what’s good and what’s not. Thanks!!

Most home sewing machines won’t handle the sort of sewing you want to do for long. And you’ll instantly void the warranty on a home sewing machine used for business — they aren’t made for the duty cycle. And home machines won’t even sew on something thick like a couple or three layers of webbing, though you might be able to persuade an old Singer 15 to go through a couple of layers of webbing — at least for awhile. At $10-20 at a garage sale, you can afford several to use and abuse till they break. Or look for a sturdy old treadle machine. Home sewing machines also don’t handle the large diameter needles and threads you probably are going to be needing, either.

So that leaves you looking for a new or used commercial or industrial machine with a high lift foot.
When I’ve got webbing to sew, I usually take it down to the local upholstery shop and they put it on their Pfaff 1245 walking foot, which are about $3K new, about $2K used. I’m sure there are some machines that can do what you need to do for less money; look for someone near you who is selling and servicing industrials; and consider putting on a servo motor.
