Dog Collar Injury
Paw Pad Injury?
I took my dog to the tennis courts on Friday to chase the ball around and get some exercise. After about 20 minutes(it was really hot) we went home. At home my dog kept licking her paw so I took a closer look. Her large pad in the center of her foot was scraped pretty good, not bleeding but raw looking and there is a flap of skin peeled back but still attached. I cleaned the area with iodine and peroxide, put some anisetpic on, let it dry and wrapped it with vet wrap for 24 hours. After that I removed the bandage and recleaned. The wound looked alot better, but the flap of skin is still there. I left the area uncovered and put the E-collar on her to keep her from messing with it and I have tried to keep her from using that leg to much. I am concerned about the flap of skin though, will it go away on its own or does it need to be cut off by my vet??
Any suggestions on how to help the healing?
My Lab has done this a few times. It quickly heals on its own. I have found it is better to cut the flap off as it will just irritated your dog, as long as she will keep her paw still for you to do it, then there is no need to see the vet.
