Citronella Dog Collar For Small Dogs

my dog HATES golfers!?

I have a Shiba Inu that’s about 1 1/2 years old now… and she HATES golfers… I live on a golf course and our backyard overlooks one of the holes, so there are golfers walking past my backyard pretty much all day long. We finally got her to pretty much stop barking when she’s INSIDE by using a spray bottle (now she just does a little muffled bark/growl if they get too close to our yard)….

but EVERY time I let her out in the backyard she barks up a storm. I know it’s starting to get on the neighbors nerves, but I can’t seem to teach her not to bark. I can’t run around the backyard with a spray bottle every time she goes out there, so that doesn’t work. We tried a citronella collar, but that failed miserably (it’s like she doesn’t even notice its there) I’m opposed to getting a shock collar, just because she’s a fairly small dog (even for her breed… only about 14 pounds). Anyone have any advice?

p.s. she also barks at every new guy that walks into the house, help?

Sounds like your pup thinks that it is your master, and not the other way around. You have to show dominance towards the animal, and not just giving up on it.

Every time, and I mean EVERYTIME the dog barks correct the behavior with a swift, not to hard pinch to the back of the neck with a loud and firm “NO!!”, put her in the down position and roller her on her tummy and give her another firm “NO!!”. You have to really mean it also, because the dog will sense it if you don’t. Do this only in the times that you want to teach her to not bark, but I wouldn’t suggest fully removing her desire to bark at anything being that it can be a good deterrent for robbers.

Spray bottles, Citronella and Shock collars don’t fix the problem, they just mask them.

You have to break the dogs train of thought yourself, since you are the master. She thinks that she is protecting you, you have to show her that it is you that will be doing the protecting.

(I’m an avid watcher of the Dog Whisperer, can you tell? haha…it really works though.)

I listed some helpful links for you at the bottom.

EDIT:

I just have to comment on the answerer Nancy M.

#1 I said a firm “NO” no where did I mention screaming. That would only frighten the dog into changing, which will only cause more problems.

#2 Had I asked this question, and gotten anyone that mentions the utilization of any kind of “electric collar” that answer would be disregard, as was yours.
