dog leash for runners
How to train a dog to walk without a leash?

The story: The people on my neighborhood are always playing with their dogs in this huge patch of grass with no leash. It looks really fun for the dog and I want to teach my puppy how to do that.

The problem: My dog ALWAYS darts out at people because she wants to say hi to them (she’s VERY affectionate) and I’m afraid she’ll get run over by a car or get into some other danger. I’ve tried searching this and done lots of methods, but nothing seems to work.

The details: The patch of grass is step on the sides, so it’s kind of like a small valley. I thought that maybe if she tries to leave the patch she’ll that the steep inclines will slow her down and that I’ll have time to catch her and bring her back. But then again she’s a fast runner.

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

the best way to teach a dog to walk off leash is to start by teaching it to walk ON the leash. the things your pup will learn while walking on the leash, like trusting and listening to you are the things you want her to do when not on the leash, so by walking on the lead you are preparing her to walk off the lead.

I have a 5 month old cocker spaniel i’m working on doing this as well. My goal is in 2 years time i want her to walk off the lead at my heel and to come when i call every single time no matter how distracted she is. In the short term though before i started letting her off the lead at the park i needed to be sure that she would come when i call and that she would stay close to me. this means that if i see her annoying someone or about to get into danger i can call her and she will come and that she won’t wander away. So i suggest this is what you work towards and if you like later on you can decide whether you want your dog to walk off lead right beside you or not.

So to start you need your dog to always come when you call. the very best way i have found is to use…. CHEESE! it’s not good for dogs but they LOVE it! because it has such a strong taste and strong smell you only use tiny pieces (it’s not poisonous but it’s not good for them so by using pieces about half to one third the size of the fingernail on your pinky you won’t make them sick or anything! this is what my puppy school trainer recommended and it’s worked really well for me. also, the reason we use cheese is because you need a high reward treat, not a regular treat, you need something your dog can’t refuse! if you prefer use pieces of ham or something, they’re not as good though because they don’t smell as much as cheese.)
so when you’re at home call your dog “fido come” and when she runs over give her a piece of cheese, when she runs off do it again and again, then call her but don’t give her any cheese. what you want to do is get her thinking when you call that she had better run over to you because there might be cheese, so even if there’s not it was worth running over just to check. this way she will ALWAYS come when you call! so sometimes give her the cheese and sometimes don’t.

next, you need her to walk nicely on the lead, you need to take her past houses where there are barking dogs and if she gets scared or barks back keep walking with her. you need her to think you two are a pack and if you walk off she should come too because you will protect her from the barking dog behind the fence. so if your dog gets scared when she is off the lead she will run towards you for protection.

It might take you a while to get your dog walking nicely on the lead, it could take 2 months but practice is the key. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mZF9LXBADI&feature=fvw this is a video that will help teach you if you don’t already know how to get your dog to walk well on the lead.

while you are doing this make sure you socialise your puppy with other dogs, if you have friends with dogs or in the street, let your puppy meet them so she won’t be scared at the park. also, teach her not to jump up on people, not on you, not on visitors at your house, no one.
then once the time comes for her to go off leash you take her off and you don’t stand still. she will go meet other dogs and you need to keep walking. this will teach her that she needs to keep her eyes on you because you are her pack and she needs to stay near you. this will teach her not to just wander off. call her name and get her to come to you a few times also. if you do all this, take your time and practice it your dog will go fine off lead! good luck!
